Hartlebury Castle
As part of the 2025 Conference we visited Hartlebury Castle, 5 miles south of Kidderminster, which was the Bishop of Worcester’s Palace for many years, but is now owned by a trust.
Our guide Robert was very enthusiastic about the palace and explained its development, growth, and decline. Along the way we visited the Hurd Library which was founded by Bishop Hurd in the 18th century and has remained intact with only minor additions and deletions from the shelves. Here we met Rachel, Barbara, and Penny, who continued to discuss the library and other rooms within the castle.
The building in its current form does not look like a castle, but before the Civil War, it was crenelated and had additional walls, which made it a castle. There are extensive grounds, but the weather was not suitable for a tour of them. Perhaps another time…
