Black Country Museum

In February 2024, as part of our Study Weekend held at Hillscourt, after a good lunch on the Saturday we boarded a small coach for the short trip to the Black Country Living Museum in Dudley. As usual this was a part of the weekend which is free to delegates, subsidised by the Society and with a small grant from OUSA.

The museum covers a big site which for many of us was possibly the only chance to see it. We had 3 hours there which was just about enough time to get a feel for it and have some refreshment. For those who do not know the museum, this outdoor site consists of several streets made up of rebuilt, replica or recreated shops, houses and industrial workshops. giving a glimpse into life in the Black Country from the beginning of the Industrial revolution until the 1960’s. These buildings are saved here so that future generations can see what life was like back then, although for some the 1960’s shops and house brought back happy memories. There is plenty of information about each building and the guides inside the shops can describe what life was like and the items they would have been sold.

It was a very enjoyable and interesting afternoon.
