The society is the only history society affiliated to the Open University Students Association that is run by students, past and present, for the benefit of current students. We publish our own quarterly magazine written by members, organise visits and activities all over the UK, and have an AGM weekend with member speakers and a visit to a local place of interest. Members are encouraged to carry out their own historical research and share the results with members.
Why join OUHS?
Joining an OU student society is a great way to meet other students, make friends and to further enrich your study. At OUHS everyone has been or is an OU Student and our shared experience and passion for History mean you are joining a Society of like-minded souls.
We provide a real opportunity to publish your own work in our prestigeous magazine. Why not share the results of all your hours of work constructing a TMA with fellow amateur historians? The magazine is packed with interest for history buffs including a wealth of local history resources from across the UK and some excellent book reviews.
Virtual and real-world history themed outings
We organise interesting and well presented talks on Zoom, which are free to members.
There are also regular trips to interesting places planned during the year. Our main event is our very popular Member Weekend in February each year with numerous presentations on historical topics, everything from Paelentology to Victorian art.
At the small, friendly residential weekend the members read papers and make presentations on their own researches on the theme for the year. All the presentations engender discussions (some less serious than others) and these often spill over to the lunch and dinner table. Some members even feel impelled to continue discussion over a pint at the local pub.
Members can renew using our online form, or send a cheque or PO if they prefer. Thank you!
